Cataract Surgery
A cataract can be the reason sharp images have become blurred, and seeing things at night has become more difficult. It also may be why the eyeglasses or contacts that used to help you read — or do any everyday, simple tasks — don’t seem to be helping any longer.
Dr. Slusher removes cataracts using a small incision technique called phacoemulsification. This is an outpatient procedure and typically, patients are able to drive and return to work rapidly. During this procedure, a small incision is made and the cataract, or cloudy lens, is removed. A new, artificial lens is then implanted in the eye.
Slusher Eye Center uses modern techniques for testing and removing cataracts. We have implemented the use of the innovative IOL Master in our office. This cutting edge technology helps determine the power of the artificial lens to be implanted and has been a successful addition to modern cataract surgery.
A thorough examination by Dr. Slusher can detect the presence and extent of a cataract and whether cataract surgery is right for you. Please contact our office if you are experiencing some of the symptoms described above.
SLT Glaucoma Laser Treatment
We offer an exciting new laser treatment for patients with glaucoma. Selective laser trabeculoplasty is a safe, effective way to reduce or eliminate a patient’s dependency on eye drops! The procedure, which is covered by most health insurance plans, is quick, typically painless, and performed right in our office.
Many of our glaucoma patients are treated with drops to lower the pressure in their eyes. While the drops are, for the most part, effective, there are some distinct disadvantages to these medications: the drops must be used regularly, they’re inconvenient, and they are often expensive. The SLT may eliminate or reduce the need for eye drops.
If you have glaucoma or are a glaucoma suspect and want to know if the new SLT laser treatment is appropriate for you, call today to schedule an appointment with the doctor. Dr. Slusher is committed to providing his patients with the very best and most sophisticated care available.
LASIK
Dr. Slusher has been performing laser vision correction for many years. He realizes that not everyone is a candidate for LASIK. Everyone’s eyes and needs are unique, and Dr. Slusher carefully examines each patient to determine their personal options.
Traditional LASIK is an outpatient procedure and is performed with a special instrument that is applied to the eye, creating a thin flap of corneal tissue. Then the laser is used to reshape the cornea. The flap is then put back into position and the procedure is complete.
Also available is the Wavefront, custom cornea LASIK. First, a wavescan is performed, mapping out a fingerprint of the individual’s eye. The laser treatment is based upon the wavescan, and often gives even better results than the traditional LASIK. Seeing well is a goal more obtainable than ever before!

ReSTOR® IOL Lens
Physicians have been using flexible Acrysof® IOLs for years to replace the eye’s cloudy lens during cataract surgery and help patients enjoy clear vision again. The ReSTOR® lens improves upon the ordinary IOL by using apodized diffractive technology to provide a full range of focusing distances from near to far. Apodization also allows the lens to work with the pupil to distribute light evenly in the eye in different lighting conditions and activity levels. Alcon® reports that up to 80% of patients who use the ReSTOR lens don’t need glasses after surgery.
Astigmatism Treatment (AcrySof Toric IOL)
If you have astigmatism and cataracts, we may be able to help. The AcrySof Toric IOL is a foldable, single-piece lens that Dr. Slusher implants during cataract surgery to replace the clouded lens. The unique design of the AcrySof Toric IOL makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision. AcrySof Toric lens provides quality distance vision, independent of eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Refractive Lens Exchange
Refractive Lense Exchange (RLE) is similar to cataract surgery, but performed for refractive purposes. In RLE the natural, clear, lense of the eye is removed and replaced with a plastic intraocular lense (IOL). The replacement IOL is of a power to correct most, if not all of the patients hyperopia or myopia.
A disadvantage with RLE is that the patient probably will lose some of their accommodation, making them presbyopic. Multifocal IOLs are available to help with correcting near and distance vision.
CK (Conductive Keratoplasty)
Do you dislike wearing reading glasses? Have you had great distance vision all your life without glasses? Are you over 40 years of age? If the answer is yes to these questions, you could be a candidate for CK! CK can help you become less dependent on reading glasses.
CK is an exciting new advancement in vision correction because it uses radiofrequency energy instead of a laser to treat your vision problem. CK is a safe, minimally invasive procedure designed to treat farsightedness. CK applies radio waves in a circular pattern on the outer cornea to shrink small areas of collagen. This circular shrinkage pattern creates a band, correctly reshaping the cornea.
CK is performed conveniently in our office and takes only minutes. If you meet the requirements for CK candidacy, and want to see how this procedure can benefit you, then call our office for a free screening appointment. We look forward to helping you “see” better!
